  • Install a programmable thermostat to lower utility bills and manage your heating and cooling systems efficiently. We recommend you set your thermostat as low as comfortable while you are awake, 68 degrees or below in the winter and when you are asleep lower it several degrees. When away in the winter on vacation set thermostat to 60 degrees don't just turn it off.
  • Air dry dishes instead of using your dishwasher's drying cycle and always run it at full capasity.
  • Turn things off when you are not in the room such as lights, TVs, entertainment systems, and your computer and monitor.
  • Plug home electronics, such as TVs and DVD players, into power strips; turn the power strips off when the equipment is not in use -- TVs and DVDs in standby mode still use several watts of power.
  • Lower the thermostat on your water heater to 120°F. The refrigerator temperature should set between 37 and 40 degrees with the freezer at 0 degrees F.
  • Take short showers instead of baths and use low-flow showerheads for additional energy savings.
  • Use rechargeable batteries for products like cordless phones and digital cameras. Studies have shown they are more cost effective than disposable batteries. If you must use disposables, check with your trash removal company about safe disposal options.
  • Wash only full loads of dishes and clothes should be washed with cold water unless they need to be sterilized .
  • and other products. ENERGY STAR products meet strict efficiency guidelines set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy.

  •  Air dry clothes.
  • Change your light bulbs from Incandesent to qualified CFL or LED bulbs.  To select the correct light bulb, look for the Lighting facts label when you shop. Its quick to compare brightness (lumens), light apperence (warm or cool) and operating costs.  For great savings choose LEDs which use less energy and last up to 5 times as long as CFLs.
  • Be sure to replace furnace filters and schedule rountine system maintenance to improve your heating and cooling systems.

  •  Cover bare floors for heat retention and comfort ,as well as, drafty windows with a heavy duty, clear plastic sheet on the inside of window frames during the winter months.
  • Don't block air vents with drapes or furniture.
  • Get a heat pump to cut your heating costs up to 50%. If you have a heat pump raise your temperature slowly to keep bill lower.  Quickly raising your heat pump temperature activates the heat strip, which uses tons of energy.
